Dear readers,
I have moved up in the world: I now have a cloth napkin.
My gig here includes daily, College lunches at the “High Table.” Last term, when I signed in for a meal, I would simply take a paper napkin from a stack.
This term, everything is different. On the wall hangs a box with my name, “Dr. Clare,” engraved below. Herein resides my cloth napkin. It is perfectly rolled, surrounded by a silver napkin holder. I am to retrieve it for my meals and return it, rolled and adorned, when I am done.
But here lies the rub: do they ever wash these napkins? Is this practice simply filthy? What happens when I accidentally chew on a fish bone? This happens often. Can I place the bone, directly from my mouth, discretely in my napkin? Should I then still roll up this said napkin, fish and all, and put it in my box? Does my box house horrible germs? These worries culminate: Shouldn’t I want to use the cloth napkin? Isn’t it more green? Ultimately, is there something wrong with me?
Woah, you are rising through the ranks. But there are some health and social repercussions.
