The NHS

National health care: it works. When I hurt my back yesterday, I got to see a doctor simply because I have been working in this country. Excellent. I arrived, I was given a form, handed a token, and told, “Please take your blood pressure, height and weight.” Token in hand, I felt confused, but looking across the room, I saw two line-ups. People were waiting to measure themselves. The machines once took money, but now took tokens. I did as I was told. I stuck my arm in the machine, I took off my shoes, I measured my height. Not a bad way to save money, right? So my reaction says more about me (and the health care I’m used to) than about the NHS: I was totally shocked.
